In a crisis, the first objective is to de-escalate the situation and keep everyone safe, and this is most effectively done by verbally defusing and stabilizing the moment. Speaking in a calm, respectful tone, acknowledging the person’s feelings, offering simple, clear options, and giving space to regain control helps reduce adrenaline and prevents the situation from escalating. This approach builds trust, reduces immediate risk, and creates the opportunity to assess needs and risks without force.

Diagnosing an underlying mental illness is important, but it isn’t the immediate action in the heat of a crisis—the focus is on immediate safety and control. Arresting the individual is not the goal of crisis intervention and can escalate danger if attempted during the crisis. Isolating the person can be counterproductive unless there is an imminent safety threat that justifies separation as a last resort. Therefore, the best course is to verbally defuse and stabilize the situation.
